SeVA Technology LLC

The SeVA platform is a composite AI device that can be effectively deployed in hospital, nursing homes and home settings. It has the capability to track a patient’s mental and physical state and signal early signs of risks such as delirium, falls or impending illness. It provides emotional support to the patient and their family by indulging in a natural conversation and facilitating their needs. When fully deployed, the product can serve as a platform which allays worry for people and their caregivers and will reduce healthcare costs by identifying the early signs of severe illness.

The Problem

Delirium is a dangerous syndrome with a high prevalence in the elderly population. It is associated with increased healthcare utilization, increased complications, and poor outcomes for patients. It not only affects the quality of life and well being of the person with delirium but also the caregivers involved in their care. Delirium is common in patients with dementia and up to 60% of the time, the diagnosis of superimposed delirium is missed.
In 2014 the cost of delirium and its complications cost the US economy nearly $160 Billion dollars, almost equivalent to the costs of heart disease and stroke combined. Delirium is preventable in up to 40% of cases. However, prevention is possible only if detected early. With the shortage of physicians and nursing leaders in the country who are trained in geriatrics principles there is a gap that can be filled by technology.

The Solution

At SeVa we aim to bridge this gap by creating a composite device that can be deployed effectively in both the hospital and home settings with the capability not only to diagnose and track the patient’s mental status but also provide emotional support to the patient by indulging in conversation and facilitating the requests and needs of the patient. When full developed, our product can serve as a robust platform for the provision of physical robotic
services to fulfill the patient’s needs by serving as the eyes, ears and mind of any such robotic device developed in the future.

The Opportunity

About 10,000 baby boomers are turning 65 every day! The U.S. population is older today than it has ever been. Memory and physical challenges are commonly seen with age and frailty. This raises challenges for the person with the disability and their family members.  As per the CDC, one in five adults provided care or assistance to a friend or family member in the past 30 days. One in ten adults is providing care to a person with dementia. By 2050, the number of Americans living with dementia is expected to triple. The total lifetime cost of care for a patient with dementia is estimated to be $321,780 in 2015 dollars. Up to 89% of patients with dementia may develop delirium, which is an acute change in cognition and awareness and usually a sign of a new illness. The Worldwide Delirium market in 2022 was approximately $250M and is expected to double by 2030.
The market for delirium treatment includes various components such as pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and services aimed at diagnosing, managing, and preventing delirium. This market encompasses medications used to treat underlying causes of delirium, sedatives, antipsychotics, and other drugs to manage symptoms, as well as non-pharmacological interventions such as environmental modifications and cognitive therapies.

Status

The SeVA platform is primarily software although there is necessary hardware in the form of sensors and communications devices that are required.
Sensors provide data that can be used for response analysis, voice analysis, HRV analysis etc. Using AI and Natural Language processing, the SeVA platform can predict and diagnose delirium.
Currently early versions of the software have been developed and integrated with various hardware items to perform early stage testing.
