Honoring Innovators & Champions
On April 1, we hosted our sixth annual I-Squared Awards and Expo event. Along with honoring the top inventors and entrepreneurs dedicated to commercializing the UArizona's inventions, the evening included a series of tables where entrepreneurial researchers from across the UArizona presented their inventions and startups.
inventor of the year:
Louise Hecker, Ph.D.
Associate professor in the UArizona Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at the Department of Medicine, College of Medicine – Tucson.
Startup of
the year:
Urbix Resources
Founded to commercialize a portfolio of lithium-ion battery and related material technologies developed in the James C. Wyant College of Optical Sciences.
Ecosystem Impact Award:
Base Horner & Curtis Gunn
Of the Desert Angels, a local private investment group that has been a great supporter of the TLA mission and an active player in helping UArizona startups succeed.
Campus Collaborator of the Year:
Jennifer Barton, Ph.D.
Director of the BIO5 Institute, who has been a champion for invention and commercialization across the ecosystem.
Student Innovator of the Year:
Dawson Baker
Doctoral student in optical sciences, who took took his own invention – a way to put nanoparticles in glass – through the TLA I-Corps program and worked with TLA to invest Asset Development funds to further the project towards commercial readiness.
David N. Allen Award for Leadership & Vision:
James C. Wyant, Ph.D
Professor emeritus of the James C. Wyant College of Optical Sciences, who not only served as founding dean of the college, but also co-founded various local optics companies and has been a constant and lasting influence in shaping Tucson as “Optics Valley” with a worldwide reputation.
