The COVID-19 pandemic and other pulmonary diseases need technology to ease the work of breathing.
SaiOx is developing a technology to help people breathe easier that are suffering from respiratory distress caused by COPD, COVID19, and other pulmonary diseases. Our device, based on the innovative research of Dr. Sairam Parthasarathy in the College of Medicine-Tucson, is called the Hespiro. It uses heliox, a mixture of helium and oxygen, to reduce the work of breathing, using a closed-circuit rebreathing system at low pressure.
Unlike typical ventilators that use high pressure to drive the oxygen into the lungs, our system uses the properties of helium, which is much less dense than air, to carry the oxygen in a manner that is more comfortable to the patient.
Our technology has the potential to impact millions of lives at the global scale for COPD. The uncomfortable nature of high-pressure machines causes patients to less likely to seek treatment. Our executive team has substantial experience in taking products from idea to market and is applying our knowledge in medical device development to make SaiOx a success.
